Collecting Bottles

Nearly half of the water bottles came from Holliston High School, where I am working on another project with the Art 1 class. At HHS, the Environmental Club recycles paper and bottles weekly, so dipping into their supply was very easy. They are interested in seeing the transformation of their "trash" into your "treasure".

The Art 1 class in Holliston is using discarded clothing as their base material. You can visit their blog listed in Other High School Projects.

This whole project has been pretty fun so far. And its been pretty easy, just cutting bottles and screwing them into chicken wire. Its like working on an assembly line. The only defect about this project is that its location isn't as nice as it could be. The area in which the project hangs is plagued by cheap drywalls, and cracks. Its dusty and isn't that pleasant to look at even with all the art there. The area is dark and shadowed and the project doesn't hang low enough to fill the space. It fills the top half, if had filled the bottom half too it would really be quite something, mysterious even, like curtain leading into who knows where. I wish we had made the piece longer before we started putting it up.

Andreas, you bring up a good point about the length of the bottles. When we were assembling the pieces we hung them in the classroom, which is a more enclosed space. Also, the desks were filling the lower half that feels "missing" in the lobby.
We can still add to that lower portion as we install the work today.

I agree with dre with the idea that the location isn't ideal but i think that even if it is dark maybe if we put lights hanging from the ceiling on the instillation the shadows projected on he wall would really improve the overall feel of the piece. Before we were talking about the meaning behind the piece but i really don't think there has to be that deep of a meaning behind it because we are just going to look at it and think that its either a cool sculpture or a useless one. I personally think its a pretty cool idea that we made this completely out of recycled bottles and maybe the idea behind it can just be that one mans junk is another mans treasure. I think that if people realize that you can make art out of anything it could possibly inspire them to come up with more original ideas and to think outside of the box.
